This collection consists primarily of the diaries of Thomas Swearingen of Berkeley Co., Va., and papers of other Swearingen family members and of a few other Frederick and Richmond County, Va., citizens including Landon Carter. The diaries, 1777 January 29-April 9 and September 21-November 13, concern two journeys made by Thomas Swearingen and his experiences with the Revolutionary army fighting in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The papers contain land patents, deeds, summonses, and correspondence of the Van Swearingen, Hezekiah Swearingen, and Thomas Swearingen families. There are also letters from Thomas Massie to his father concerning his training as a physician, a letter regarding the presidential election of 1844, and letters from John Calef concerning business meetings with Sir Francis Bernard and William Legge, the second Earl of Dartmouth.
